This weekend we spent some time with Andy's parents in their orchard. Every year they have a big cider pressing weekend and the whole family comes into town to help out and spend time together. I've always seen the bushels and bushels of apples ready in bins for pressing, but never been a part of the picking and sorting that happens beforehand.
It's so fun to see this side of Andy. He grew up in orchards and I grew up under street lights, so being a part of what he knows from childhood is always a new adventure for me.
I was clearly a rookie, because I filled my bushels too high and then Andy had to carry them for me :)
Everyone agrees that this year is just unbelievable for apples in our part of the country. The trees are quite literally bursting and in some cases, splitting in half because of the abundance of fruit.
I tried my best to be a help, but in all honesty I was having a bit too much fun just exploring the orchard. It was a quintessential fall day complete with glowing sun and enough chill in the air to convince you the apples were crisping right under your nose.
A special little someone came out to visit us. For those of you who have been around for a while, you'll recognize Chester. He was our kitty who went to live with Andy's parents after I found out I was allergic while simultaneously trying to deal with his biting problems.
He rules the roost and has somehow managed to make all the other animals fear him. Oh Chester. Deep down he wants to be sweet, but then his nature takes over and his aggression wins out. He was very sweet this weekend, though, and even came running up the orchard when he heard me calling his name.
Andy's parents were still picking by the time we left, and they will be for several weeks with the amount of apples they have this year. Papa predicts we'll press well over 100 gallons of cider, and probably a lot more.
I can't wait to share our cider pressing day with you - it's always a fun day that we look forward to every year. We're going to have a full house, complete with little nephews that we will all (including Chloe!) be so excited to see. So fun!
Hope you had a great weekend!
