Sometimes It Has To Get Worse Before It Gets Better

Andy and I should really know by now that whenever we tackle a project in our house we should expect some ridiculous road block. We've learned from replacing the doors, trying to replace a bathroom faucet, trying to replace our closet light... the list goes on! What SHOULD be an easy project ends up taking a nose dive half way in.

The good news is, I have an excellent husband who will persevere through the most annoying tasks just because he knows I'm so excited for the end result.

That above would be one of two hidden LIVE electrical outlets Andy uncovered while taking out the old tile. Apparently that's bad, and before we move forward we have to take those out.

That above is the state of our kitchen right now. It is also about the exact time that we looked at each other and asked if there was any way we could undo what we just did and pretend it never happened.

Also, someone in the past plastered over drywall, which means we have some problems when it comes to removing the old glue and leveling the surface. Which then means that Andy actually has to cut through and pry off the whole wall down to the studs, so that he can re-drywall (or cement board, or something) in order to then put the new tile on.

Hehe. Just keep swimming... just keep swimming... :)

We keep telling ourselves that it will be worth it in the end. And it will. I'm sure of it!

In the meantime, we have an excellent project to distract us from the ever-extending long wait for a referral!

  1. Love old houses. I can't believe they tiled over a live outlet!!!

Good luck!! We're (finally) doing our kitchen this summer -- also plaster walls - which also means tearing down to the studs and re-drywalling. All sorts of fun. :)

Hopefully it'll be worth it in the end and you'll be so happy!

    1. Oh my gosh - I feel like there should be an "Owners with old houses" support group! :)

Good luck with your kitchen!! As crazy as the process is, it IS so worth it in the end... especially when you can look back and be proud of the fact that you did it yourself and survived! :)

  2. it's probably a good thing you found those hidden outlets since they were live and all. yikes!

can't wait to have some sort of celebratory cook-off or something in your kitchen when it's done. :)
